Basic Course 1 – Gears & Drivetrain

Do you want to understand how gears and the drivetrain work—and be able to adjust them yourself?
In Basic Course 1, you’ll learn everything you need to know to take the best possible care of your own drivetrain. This results in a bike that runs quietly, shifts better, and lasts significantly longer.
Over the course of three hours, we’ll go through the entire system step by step—you’ll get to both observe and perform the tasks yourself on your own bike under supervision.

NOTE! If your drivetrain is starting to show signs of wear, we recommend taking the opportunity to replace it during the course itself—that way, you’ll save almost the entire cost of the course just on what it would have cost to take your bike to a repair shop. If you’re unsure whether it’s time to replace your drivetrain or which parts you need to buy, feel free to stop by our shop with your bike, and we’ll help you pick out the parts so they’ll be ready for you during the course.

What you’ll learn:

Changing the Chain

  • How to Remove and Install a Chain Using the Right Tools

  • How to Tell When It's Time to Replace the Chain

  • Differences Between Different Types of Chains

  • How to Change Gears and Aim a Curve

  • Practical Tips for Avoiding Future Problems

Adjust the gears

  • Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

All steps are hands-on, and you’ll get to perform the tasks yourself on your own bike with guidance.
The course is suitable for all types of bikes with gears—MTB, gravel, road, and e-bikes.

After completing the course, you'll be able to identify, adjust, and replace the most common components in your drivetrain on your own—and you won't have to take your bike in for every little gear adjustment.

The course requires no prior knowledge.
We’ll go through everything in a relaxed and hands-on way, where you’ll get to work on your own bike under supervision.

We'll provide you with a workbench and all the tools you need. If you'd like to replace parts on your bike during the course, there will be an additional charge for the parts, unless you bring your own.

You'll receive personalized guidance from our mechanics, along with delicious snacks and great coffee.
